It is January. Blah. Even along the Grand Strand, it is cold, the days are short, and the weather is so frequently miserable that you have little choice but to remain indoors. Thanks to what can feel like the long toil of winter, our immune systems, and mental health tend to be under attack more than any other time of year. If you are one of the many people that work in an office or an interior scenario where the inside and outside temperatures vary greatly, surviving this season seems to require every ounce of energy you may have. Even if it is just a minor inconvenience, it has a tendency to take a toll on your mindset. Never fear, Pawley’s Raw Bar is here with a few tips to combat the blah feelings so typically associated with winter.

Tip #1 – Look better!

No brainer right. Everyone wants to look better. We aren’t talking about cutting inches off your waistline. Instead, the more serious point here is that cold weather messes with your skin. Constantly moving between extreme temperatures negatively affects your skin. Eating Salmon can play some defense for your skin. Salmon is rich in both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These essential nutrients help prevent your skin from drying out.

Tip #2 – Be Strong!

No, we are not asking you to go to the gym to lift weights. But protecting your mental and heart health should be a top priority for you. Seasonal Affective Disorder is real, and the decreased daylight does create a vitamin D deficiency. The easy way to overcome that lack of sunlight is to focus on foods that can provide it for you instead. Salmon and tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help boost cardiovascular health and have been proven to enhance emotional health. Eating fish rich in omega-3s can also help offset decreased activity levels and help keep you away from issues like increased blood pressure.

Tip #3 – Beat colds and flu!

It should come as no surprise that your lungs are one of the most vulnerable parts of your body in winter. Again, the back and forth between extreme temperatures and humidity levels wreak havoc on your body. The nutrients in certain fish can help increase the airflow your lungs can intake, which will help you fight off any ailments attempting to plague you during the colder months.

At Pawley’s Raw Bar, we serve Salmon, Tuna, and Mahi. All three have been touted as superfoods and can help your mental and physical health.

Constantly touted as a healthy fish with many nutritional benefits, low in calories, low in saturated fat, Salmon is also an excellent source of protein and is bursting with potassium, iron, and vitamin D. Salmon is also one of the best sources of vitamin B12.

Tuna is a massive fish and one of the most common fish offerings. It is known for its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and its ability to help reduce LDL cholesterol levels that can accumulate inside your arteries. Studies have shown that eating tuna can help reduce cardiovascular disease.

Grilled or blackened, you can find Mahi as a topping for our house and Caesar salads, grilled and featured on a sandwich, as part of our fresh catch menu, and finally, from the specialties menu, blackened and served with red potatoes and sautéed spinach topped with bacon and tomatoes.

So take winter head-on. Stop by Pawley’s Raw Bar for an entree that will not only taste amazing but help you fight back against the adverse effects winter has on our minds and bodies!
